Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Are there any eligibility requirements for my child to participate in Athletics?

Yes, there are requirements to participate in all sports:

How are teams chosen?

The coaching staff chooses our competitive teams at the conclusion of tryouts.  Students must attend all tryout dates to be considered for a team.  These teams compete against middle schools across the county.  Each sport has a boy and girls’ team, except golf, which is co-ed.  In all sports 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students compete together except for track & field.  In track & field, students are separated by grade level.

When do sports take place?

Tryouts and practices are held after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, from 4:15 pm to 5:20 pm.  Specific game schedules will be handed out by the coach on the first day of each season.

Is transportation provided?

Activity buses will be provided by the school for participants.  The buses depart Mariner Middle School at 5:30 pm and transport students to the school closest to their homes.  From there it is the parent’s responsibility to pick up their child.  Buses do not drop students off at their regular bus stops.  You may also pick your child up at Mariner Middle at the front of the school.  Students must be picked up no later than 5:30.

Can my child participate in more than one sport?

Absolutely!  Students are encouraged to participate in multiple school-related activities, including sports, clubs, etc.  Our coaches work around other school-related schedules.  We want our students to experience all that Mariner Middle has to offer.

What can I expect if my child is chosen for a team?

If chosen for a school team your child will be loaned a team uniform, which will be returned at the end of the season.  Additionally, each team member will be given a schedule of games, with times and locations so you can come and support the team.  Practices will continue to be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays during the competitive season.

Are parents allowed to watch practice/tryouts?

No, sorry.  For the safety and security of all students and coaches, parents are asked not to attend.  We look forward to seeing you on game days!
