What are Intramural Sports?

Intramural sports are an opportunity for students to gain exposure to athletics, develops social skills, and meet new people at school.  Intramurals are open to all students at Mariner Middle School.  All students practice for about three weeks until the competitive team is chosen.

How are teams chosen?

Our competitive teams are chosen from students who participate in intramurals by the coaching staff.  These teams compete against middle schools across the county.  Each activity has a separate boys and girls team, except golf which is co-ed.  In all sports 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students compete together except track.  In track students is separated by grade level. 

Are there any eligibility requirements for my child to participate in an intramural sport?

Yes, there are requirements to participate in an intramural sport:

            Students are required to have a GPA of a 2.0 or higher in season prior to the sport.

            Students are required to demonstrate exemplary behavior on and off the court/field/track/course.

            Students provide proof of insurance

            Students must meet district athletic requirements

            Students must have a signed Consent & Release Form (one form will cover a student for the year)

 

When do intramural sports take place?

Intramural activities are held afterschool Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 4:00pm to 5:20pm.  Specific schedules will be reviewed by the coach on the first day of each sport.

Does my child need medical insurance?

The School District of Lee County Requires all intramural participants covered by medical insurance.  Students Accidents Insurance forms are handed out at lunch, are in the front office, are online and can be obtained from Coach Koprowski.  Students must have a signed Consent & Release Form, providing insurance company and policy number on file with the Intramural Director for the current year before they will be allowed to participate. 

Is transportation provided?

Activity buses will be provided by the school for participants.  The buses depart Mariner Middle School at 5:30pm and transport students to the school closest to their home.  From there it is the parent’s responsibility to pick up their child.  Buses do not drop students off at their regular bus stop.  You may also pick your child up at Mariner Middle School at the front of the school.  Students must be picked up no later than 5:30.

Can my child participate in more than one intramural sport?

Absolutely!  Students are encouraged to participate in multiple school-related activities, including sports, clubs, etc.  Our coaches work around other school related schedules.  We want our students to experience all that Mariner Middle has to offer.

What can I expect if my child is chosen for a team?

If chosen for a school team your child will be loaned a school uniform, which will be returned at the end of the season.  Additionally, each team member will be given a schedule of games, with times and locations so you can come and support the team.  Practices will continue to be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays during the competitive season.

Are parents allowed to watch practice/try-outs?

No, sorry.  For the safety and security of all students and coaches, parents are asked not to attend.  We look forward to seeing you on game days!
